Description
Fincantieri was founded in 1959 as a holding company at the service of Italian shipyards and became an operating company in 1984. Its mission was that of reorganizing the national shipbuilding industry and finding new niche markets in which the “Made in Italy” could stand out and excel. Based in the city of Trieste, the company today is one of the main and most diversified shipbuilding groups in the world, with facilities and factories on four continents but with a central beating heart firmly established in Italy. Listed on the stock exchange since 2014, Fincantieri is the world leader in the construction of cruise ships and it is the only group that is active in all sectors of high-tech shipbuilding. Two hundred thirty years of national industrial history with over 7,000 built units account for its know-how.
The facility of Venice-Marghera
The “Ernesto Breda” shipyard in Venice-Marghera was founded as a naval engineering branch of the Milanese construction company of the same name at the time of the establishment of Marghera’s industrial center in 1917. Its construction was delayed by the aftermath of the Battle of Caporetto and the subsequent post-WWI economic crisis. The “Ernesto Breda” facility began its activity in 1922, in the ship-demolition sector first, and later embarked on actual production activities starting from 1923. Well after the Second World War, in the 1970s, its facilities were considerably enhanced by building its large construction dock, 335 meters long and 54 meters wide. In 1984, it joined Fincantieri, who made it the group’s second hub specializing in the construction of cruise ships.
